Scaletec’s Guide to Hanging Scales

Scaletec’s Guide to Hanging Scales

A hanging scale, also known as a crane scale or suspension scale, is a suspended weighing device used in demanding industrial environments. Generally speaking, hanging scales are used to weigh objects suspended in the air. A crane scale does the same thing, but typically is used for heavy-duty weighing applications.

What are hanging scales used for?

Hanging scales are used in a wide range of industrial applications and environments, from weighing small bags of produce and fertiliser to weighing large crates in warehouses, factories and shipyards. On farms and in other types of agriculture settings, farmers use hand-held hanging scales to measure fertiliser for crops or to weigh bags of animal feed.

Crane scales are used in heavy-duty, industrial applications, such as weighing pallets, sacks and crates in warehouses and factories. High-capacity crane scales often are used in outdoor environments such as construction sites to lift and weigh heavy steel alloy bars, or at shipping ports to weigh oversized containers before loading for transport overseas.

Do hanging scales comply with Safe Working Load guidelines?

Safe Working Load guidelines ensure that industrial equipment is used safely and responsibly. Hanging scales clearly display the maximum weight capacity and are in compliance with Safe Working Load guidelines. To maintain a safe working environment, it’s important to follow these guidelines. Failure to do so could result in damage to the scale, products or machinery, which could result in personal injury or compensation claims.

What is the maximum amount that can be weighed with a hanging scale?

Hanging scales can provide the high weight capacities needed to weigh large containers, crates and pallets. We stock Adam Equipment’s IHS industrial crane scales, which offer a maximum capacity of 10,000kg.

Choose the best hanging scale for your needs

Weight capacity

When you’re shopping for a hanging scale, the first consideration is total weight capacity. We recommend choosing a hanging scale with a maximum capacity slightly over the heaviest weight of items you expect to measure.

Product

Take into consideration the type of products you plan to weigh. For example, if you need to weigh shipping containers at a port or on a dock, you’ll want to use a hanging scale with significant protection against water.

Applications

Depending on the model and type of scale, the features will vary. Crane scales generally are equipped with remote control operation for additional safety. Most hanging scales offer a peak hold function that allows you to easily record a weight value.
